When a fundraiser told me they were looking for a spin to win wheel to raise funds at a carnival, I was delighted to oblige, although I finished in bare wood and it looked so much better once they’d painted it.
Rather than just have prizes printed on the wheel, the request was to have a horizontal wheel that the prizes could ride around on.
To construct the wheel the hub of a bicycle was used as about the only thing that has smooth running bearings that would take the weight, and the flapper was attached using some of the plastic sides of an old milk carton, resulting in a very satisfying clacking noise as it passes each of the dowels which slow the wheel to an eventual stop.
A great success, as the harder you spin the wheel the longer it clicks for and as you can imagine children just wanted to keep coming back for another spin, with the added bonus of the noise attracting a constant stream of players!
